'Flashes of stardom' made Caleb Banks irresistible to Vikings, but questions remain

It's no secret that Caleb Banks coming off the board at pick No. 18 to the Minnesota Vikings has been viewed as one of the most surprising selections from the opening round of the 2026 NFL Draft.

Banks was only able to appear in two games with Florida last season due to a foot injury, and most recently, he suffered another foot injury during testing at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year. Still, the Vikings clearly felt he was a risk worth taking based on the tremendous upside that he possesses.

FanSided's Marcus Mosher also believes Banks definitely has what it takes to succeed at the pro level, but admits that the young defensive lineman staying healthy is still a big question mark.

"Banks is the ultimate 'planet theory' player. There are only a handful of players with his size and athleticism on this earth. You see the flashes of stardom in his game, but he's been unable to stay on the field due to injuries.

Banks has all the tools to be one of the league's best defensive tackles, but he'll need to find consistency before he even becomes a starter."

Minnesota Vikings believe they have to right tools to help Caleb Banks reach his full potential in the NFL

Those "flashes of stardom" that Mosher mentions about Banks are exactly what led to him getting drafted in the first round by Minnesota this past Thursday.

Obviously, the Vikings are hoping to see more than just "flashes" from their rookie defensive lineman next season and beyond, or else they wouldn't have used the 18th overall selection in this year's NFL Draft on him.

During a recent appearance on "The Paul Allen Show," Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell talked about how the team is more focused on Banks having a long impact on the franchise and not his current foot injury, which could be a very minor blip in his NFL career.

"Caleb happens to have something right now that people know about. He's a big man. I understand that.

It's a foot injury. But I can promise you that a heck of a lot more goes into it as far as the projection of where not only we think he's at right now, where we think he's going to be at for training camp, and then what hopefully a long career with the Minnesota Vikings looks like based upon all that information.”

For a player at his size (6-foot-6 and 327 pounds), Banks having a pair of foot injuries within the last year is definitely a concern when it comes to projecting how successful he could potentially be with the Vikings.

But we have to remember that Minnesota currently has one of the best defensive coordinators in the entire league in Brian Flores, and if he's okay with taking a risk on Banks, then that is something that should make everyone feel at least a little better about the Vikings' latest first-round pick.
