Before the Minnesota Vikings signed Jauan Jennings to fill the void, they were certainly in the market for a veteran WR3. Some options were very easy to tie to them, while others, while a bit interesting, looked like a more strained fit.
The biggest reason Stefon Diggs remains available in mid-May is a legal situation that is now resolved.
The New England Patriots' decision to cut him was rooted in hefty cap numbers more than any issue with his performance, coming off an 85-catch, 1,000-yard season after suffering a torn ACL in 2024. Patriots teammates and head coach Mike Vrabel touted Diggs for his strong leadership last season.
Any team in need with a clear remaining need at wide receiver could very well kick the tires on Diggs.
With that in mind, ESPN's John Keim recently highlighted the Washington Commanders' search for a viable WR2 opposite Terry McLaurin.
They are most easily tied to San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, since he was a college teammate of quarterback Jayden Daniels. But, until they absolutely have to, the 49ers don't seem motivated to do anything with a player they've openly acknowledged they are done with.
Best landing spot for former Minnesota Vikings WR Stefon Diggs is absolutely obvious now
Diggs was born in Maryland, not far from where the Commanders play in Landover, and he's a University of Maryland alum. So his potential tie starts there.
Earlier this month, at an event for his charitable foundation, Diggs told 106.7 The Fan he has talked to Commanders' players "a little bit." He also came off like he's not in a big hurry to sign anywhere, referencing what happens over "the next couple months" to determine who he'll sign with.
As an established veteran, Diggs is probably not overly motivated to participate in the voluntary portion of an offseason program when he's working out on his own. So waiting to see what comes his way right now makes sense.
If any interested teams have waited this long to pursue him, they'll surely be willing to wait a little longer with nothing of great importance going on.
If Diggs wants a notable role, the Commanders have it to give him. They would also presumably be willing to beat any other offers he gets, assuming it doesn't require a multi-year deal to do so.
Multiple teams likely have some level of interest in Diggs. But a return home, with the promise of a WR2 role catching passes from one of the top young quarterbacks in the league, clearly stands above the rest as the best fit.
