Fresh Jalen Nailor free agent buzz confirms Vikings will be on outside looking in

After last year's spending spree in free agency, the Minnesota Vikings are guaranteed to be more conservative this offseason. Once they complete their effort to get under the salary cap, of course.

One of the more notable free agents for the Vikings is wide receiver Jalen Nailor. He has not put up huge numbers thus far in his career, as the team's No. 3 wide receiver, but he has shown some promise when opportunity has knocked, and he could fully blossom in a bigger role.

In terms of a return to the Vikings for Nailor, it primarily and obviously will come down to how far they're willing to go contractually. With that, it's fair to assume he'll find a better deal on the open market. When it comes down to it, he should not take any kind of discount to stay in what's lined up to continue to be a minimized role in Minnesota.

New Jalen Nailor buzz all but confirms he won't be back with the Minnesota Vikings in 2026

Over the week in Indianapolis at the NFL Combine, Alec Lewis of The Athletic gathered a lot of intel about Nailor among his notes regarding the Vikings' overall plan for free agency.

"More than 10 teams are eyeing Vikings receiver Jalen Nailor, according to league sources. Nailor recently turned 27 and will be one of the more coveted free-agent wide receivers next week. Even though he has caught only 69 NFL passes and never reached 450 yards in a season, multiple evaluators think he has the potential to become a priority signing."

"The Vikings don’t want to lose Nailor. The coaches — especially receivers coach Keenan McCardell — have watched him progress into one of their best developmental stories. He can absorb a complex playbook. He is a willing run blocker. He possesses vertical speed, and he displays separation ability, too."

Lewis then offered a more direct note about Nailor's potential from a league executive, and the resulting implications for the contract he'll get.

"One NFC executive posited that he could see Nailor producing an 80-catch season in the near future."

"Nailor’s contract will match that level of production. He could be in line for a three-year deal worth an average annual value of between $12 million and $15 million, league sources said. By comparison, Giants receiver Darius Slayton signed a three-year contract worth $36 million a couple of seasons ago."

As confirmed by Lewis, reporting basically one-third of the league has some level of interest, multiple other teams could sign Nailor to a multi-year contract that aligns with making him their WR2. The path to that role with the Vikings would only be paved by Jordan Addison being traded, and the prospect of that happening has cooled lately.

Nothing Lewis has freshly reported about Nailor is surprising as free agency gets closer. Barring a complete 180 in the current direction things are going, the Vikings simply won't be able to compete in the market for his services.
