Initial reports on the exact financial terms varied slightly, but the max value in the $16 million range was consistent.
Of course, when insiders report a contract using words like “up to” or “max value,” the devil is in the details. Pending the accounting for Smith’s deal, the Vikings have about $8.8 million in 2026 cap space, according to Over The Cap.
The Vikings will also want to carry some cap space into the season to address potential needs, even with other contract restructures possibly coming. Smith’s cap hit simply couldn’t consume that entire amount.
Smith probably wasn’t looking for a massive payday in what’s likely to be his final season. At the same time, the Vikings had to offer enough to get him off the fence about playing this year. The resulting deal gives both sides what they needed without forcing either to assume all the risk.

Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk was first to offer the details of Smith's contract.
- Signing bonus: $6.95 million
- 2026 base salary: $1.3 million
- 2026 per-game active roster bonus: $235,294 per game ($4 million total)
The signing bonus and, presumably, fully guaranteed veteran’s minimum base salary give Smith $8.25 million upfront. He can collect another $4 million by being active for all 17 games, providing a little extra motivation to play Week 1 on short notice.
Those numbers line up with the details of Tom Pelissero’s initial report. His former NFL Network colleagues suggested that the full $4 million tied to Smith being active for all 17 games was effectively certain to be collected -- an obvious bit of PR spin from the agent involved.
What about the remaining $4 million? Pelissero reported it was tied to postseason performance, all the way to the Vikings winning the Super Bowl. Florio confirmed that's the case:
"The $4 million in incentives are based on $1 million for earning a playoff berth (wild-card or bye), $1.5 million for winning in the divisional round, $2 million for winning the NFC Championship, or $4 million for winning the Super Bowl."
If Smith is active for all 17 regular-season games and the Vikings win the Super Bowl, he’ll collect the full $16.25 million. Otherwise, Minnesota’s financial commitment decreases along with his availability or the team’s postseason success -- which is exactly what makes the deal such a smart compromise.
