Until the Minnesota Vikings get their quarterback situation settled, there will be a ton of speculation about how the team should approach the position. For 2026, the answer seems to be a competition between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy. But what happens after that?
If Kyler Murray plays well and re-signs with the Vikings following this season, there will be no need to hunt for a new starter. The same situation exists with J.J. McCarthy if he has a breakout season, since he is still on his rookie deal with Minnesota.
If Murray doesn't re-sign and McCarthy doesn't have a good year, new general manager Nolan Teasley will need to search for a new starting quarterback for the franchise. Interestingly, a new candidate has emerged if that situation arises.
Could Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield be an option for the Minnesota Vikings in 2027?
On Friday, Albert Breer made an interesting post on X where he quoted a post from Buccaneers beat writer Rick Stroud that outlined some of the struggles happening in Tampa Bay involving Baker Mayfield.
Interesting situation. Baker Mayfield headed into a contract year. https://t.co/cXwAFgea9f

The attached quote from Mayfield should be very interesting to Minnesota Vikings fans. It appears the dialogue between the Bucs and Mayfield isn't very productive, and that frustration shines through when he says that it's "not exactly the case" for sticking around in the NFC South.
2026 will be a contract year for Baker Mayfield. If he and Tampa Bay can't work out an extension, there is a chance the 31-year-old quarterback could hit free agency and cash in with a team other than the Buccaneers.
It's not like Mayfield hasn't earned an extension from Tampa Bay. Since taking over for Tom Brady in 2023, the former first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns has led the Buccaneers to a 27-24 record and earned two Pro Bowl nods.
Baker has provided stability at the quarterback position while attempting to fill the shoes of a legend in Tampa Bay. In Minnesota, Vikings fans would love to have stability after what they saw on the field from the offense last season.
There is still plenty of time for Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to work things out. However, if they don't figure things out, the front office of the Minnesota Vikings would be foolish not to consider bringing him to U.S. Bank Stadium to help the purple and gold be competitive going forward.
