Jauan Jennings’s arrival to Vikings may come with a hidden benefit

The Minnesota Vikings signed Jauan Jennings to a one-year deal on Thursday night and his addition comes with several benefits. A viable No. 3 receiver and an aggressive blocker, Jennings can play plenty of roles in Kevin O’Connell’s offense. But a hidden value could be what Jennings brings as a passer.

Jennings isn’t suddenly throwing his name into the quarterback competition between J.J. McCarthy and Kyler Murray. But he was called upon for a pair of big touchdown throws during his time with the San Francisco 49ers, including one during a Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

With those being his only two career attempts, his perfect passer rating is probably something to ignore. But it could also increase the effectiveness of Kevin O’Connell’s trick plays as he integrates a new weapon into the offense.

Jauan Jennings’s passing ability could help the Minnesota Vikings be more explosive in 2026

O’Connell hasn’t been afraid to go into his bag during his time with the Minnesota Vikings, as skill position players have completed 5-of-6 passes for 86 yards and a touchdown since he was hired in 2022. The thrill of an unexpected pass, such as the 32-yard touchdown pass from Cam Akers to Josh Oliver last year, is something that will get any fan’s blood pumping. But it comes at a disadvantage for the Vikings.

Of the nine pass attempts by non-quarterbacks during the O’Connell era (former punter Ryan Wright had two during the 2022 season), Justin Jefferson has five of them, completing four for 54 yards. The play usually pans out in the Vikings' favor, but it also takes their top receiver out of the play, usually throwing to a lesser option.

This was especially true when Jefferson attempted a pass on a 3rd-and-1 during a 2022 Wild Card loss to the New York Giants. While Jefferson completed the pass, it was a screen to Kirk Cousins that was predictably stopped for a two-yard loss.

That play may give Vikings fans PTSD when O’Connell goes to a trick play this upcoming season, but it could provide a different result with Jennings throwing the ball and shore up one of their biggest weaknesses from last season.

Minnesota ranked last among 32 teams with a 31.8% conversion rate on third down and 19th with a 56.9% touchdown rate in the red zone in 2025. While running the ball on 3rd-and-short would be one way to boost those numbers, having Jennings be able to throw to Jefferson on a trick play could work better when O’Connell decides to call a trick play.

This could help the Vikings regain some of the explosiveness that was missing in their offense a year ago and become another way that Jennings can help as he comes to Minnesota.
