After it felt like the possibility of a deal between the two was getting smaller and smaller as each day passed, the Minnesota Vikings and free-agent wide receiver Jauan Jennings finally agreed to a contract on Thursday to add the veteran pass-catcher to the team's 2026 roster.
Before free agency even began earlier this offseason, OverTheCap.com projected Jennings to land a new contract worth $16.7 million per year. Well, based on this projection, the Vikings got a massive bargain with the deal they were able to get the former San Francisco 49ers receiver to agree to.
According to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport on Thursday, Jennings and Minnesota agreed to a one-year contract that has a base salary of $8 million and a max value of $13 million if incentives are met. The Vikings essentially landed him for half of what he was expected to get in free agency this offseason.
Jauan Jennings gives Minnesota Vikings a scary 3-headed monster in the WR room
During this year's NFL Draft, Minnesota opted not to use any of its selections to add another wide receiver to the mix. So after the event concluded, adding some additional depth to the position group felt like a no-brainer.
Not only did the Vikings add more depth to their wide receiver room, but they did it by adding arguably the best receiving option left in free agency.
Since 2024, Jennings has racked up more catches, receiving yards, and receiving touchdowns than Minnesota's No. 2 pass-catcher, Jordan Addison. That's the kind of talent the Vikings added on Thursday.
Most are assuming Jennings will enter the 2026 season as Minnesota's No. 3 receiver behind Addison and Justin Jefferson. But with his per-game numbers being better than Addison's during the last two years, don't be surprised if Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell comes up with several play-calls that only have Jefferson and Jennings on the field as the team's wide receivers.
It might be more of a WR2a and WR2b situation with Addison and Jennings next season than people realize. But that's also not a bad thing, and perhaps Jennings' arrival is even something that could help motivate Addison just enough to take his game to an elite level.
Minnesota used a first-round pick on him in 2023, but he has yet to accumulate at least 1,000 receiving yards in a season during his tenure with the team.
Regardless, the Vikings added another impressively talented playmaker to their offense on Thursday, and they did it at a price that few thought was possible when free agency began earlier this offseason.
