During his three seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, Jordan Addison has provided the team with multiple exciting on-the-field moments, while also finding himself in several unfavorable off-the-field situations.
Despite Addison's off-the-field concerns, it sounds like the Vikings would still like to keep him around as a long-term member of the team's roster.
According to ESPN's Kevin Seifert on Wednesday, a contract extension for the young wide receiver is something that Minnesota has reportedly already "budgeted for." This doesn't guarantee that Addison will be extended by the Vikings in the future, but it certainly reveals that the team is seriously considering it.
Is rewarding Jordan Addison with an extension too risky for the Minnesota Vikings?
In 46 games with Minnesota since 2023, Addison has accumulated a total of 175 catches, 2,396 receiving yards, and 24 touchdowns (22 receiving and two rushing).
Are those numbers what the Vikings were hoping for when they used a first-round pick on him three years ago? One would like to think so, especially when one considers that he's always played second fiddle to Justin Jefferson during his time with Minnesota.
But is Addison's production enough to lower the Vikings' concerns about what he does off the field moving forward? Even if it is, it would be wise for Minnesota to create an extension that allows the team to quickly back out of the deal if the wide receiver finds himself in another troubling situation in the future.
Unfortunately for Addison, his poor off-the-field decisions in the last three years are likely going to limit how much the Vikings are willing to offer. If he's looking to become one of the highest-paid wide receivers in the NFL, then that probably won't happen as a member of Minnesota's roster.
Who knows if Addison will still even be with the Vikings by the time it comes for him to land an extension? If a team comes along and offers Minnesota a future first-round draft pick in exchange for the young receiver, that's a trade that is going to be very hard for the Vikings to pass up.
If you think that's a crazy possibility, just look at two of the recent trades from around the NFL that have involved wide receivers.
The Denver Broncos just gave up a first, third, and fourth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins for Jaylen Waddle, and the Buffalo Bills sent over a second-round draft selection to the Chicago Bears for D.J. Moore. In the last three seasons, Addison has scored more touchdowns (24) than both Waddle (12) and Moore (22).
The 2026 campaign was already going to be an important one for Addison in determining his future with Minnesota. But with what Wednesday's report revealed, the young pass-catcher might even have more on the line next season than anyone had previously anticipated.
