Through what was undeniably the toughest season of his career in 2025, Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson put on a positive face no matter what.
Still, visions of him eventually asking for a trade, and maybe sooner rather than later, remain in the ethos of some analysts and overly optimistic fanbases.
Things are looking better for Jefferson heading into 2026. Kyler Murray is in line to replace J.J. McCarthy as the starting quarterback for the Vikings, and if McCarthy has to play, he should automatically be better than he was last season. If things really go to heck and a hand-basket, Carson Wentz showed he is still capable enough last year.
But what if Murray shows his best days are already behind him, or he can't stay healthy? What if McCarthy, if he has to play, still looks overwhelmed by it all? Would the non-diva Jefferson have a change of heart?
Minnesota Vikings insider issues reasonable warning about Justin Jefferson's future
Matthew Coller of Purple Insider was a guest on a recent episode of "Yahoo Sports Daily." The looming camp competition between Murray and McCarthy was, of course, the most prominent topic of conversation. But Coller was asked about the level of concern he has that Jefferson will become disgruntled and want out if things don't go well this season.
"Yeah, I mean last year was pretty incredible with Justin Jefferson and the way that he handled everything.
...He wants to set records. He wants to be considered the greatest wide receiver to ever play. I think we all have Jerry Rice in the No. 1 spot, but that’s who Justin is chasing. And he has more yards by his age than any other wide receiver in NFL history. So that’s where he’s setting the bar for himself.
...If you feel like your team cannot get the quarterback position solved and it’s hurting your ability to be one of the greatest of all time, which of course he has all the talent to be able to do that, then I think, yeah, frustration would go along with pretty much anyone.”
Coller got into contract dynamics that could make it viable for Jefferson to ask for a trade, while also noting, "I don’t know if that’s something that he would ever want to do."
"Contracts are generally set up to have lower cap hits in the early years and then get super expensive at the end of the contract, which is where you negotiate an extension.
...He's in line to get an extension after this year, and they need him to do that in order to lower his gigantic [future] cap hits.
So, you've sort of reached a fork in the road with Jefferson. It’s either you’re going to sign an extension with this team, stay with them long term, lock yourself in, probably [be a] Minnesota Viking for life."
On that note, barring a significant contract restructure that would surely have to come with him asking to be traded, trading Jefferson would still be unpalatable in 2027.
Coller did provide the clearest scenario where Jefferson's future in Minnesota could become a legit question.
"If you’re talking about another year of inaccurate passes, frustrations, [and] not competing for the playoffs, the fact that the best wide receiver in football has zero playoff wins to this point is not a fact that is lost on Justin Jefferson, I don’t think.
So, it is a really, really important year for him and the organization."
Even if things don't go as well as hoped for him and the team this season, it's still patently unlikely Jefferson will ask to be traded.
But if things do go too similarly to last season, there will be a harsh evaluation point for the entire organization next offseason. In concert with that, Jefferson would naturally have to consider where he wants his future to be.
