The Minnesota Vikings are busy preparing for the 2026 NFL season, and one of the biggest questions that fans have about the upcoming slate of games is how the play at quarterback can be improved from last season.
At the moment, a competition between free agent signing Kyler Murray and young passer J.J. McCarthy seems to be the strategy for the Vikings, but time will tell how that pans out for the purple and gold.
Last season, Minnesota ranked No. 28 in passing yards (2,834), No. 28 in passing touchdowns (18), and No. 26 in points scored (344). Those numbers will make it extremely challenging to compete for a playoff spot if they repeat this year.
Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Justin Jefferson has strong opinions about the team's quarterback situation.
Sports Illustrated shared an article recently discussing the quarterback situation for the Minnesota Vikings. In that piece, star wide receiverJustin Jefferson weighed in on the battle between Murray and McCarthy.
"Just seeing that competition battle, seeing those guys come every single day, leading the team and trying to spark the offense. It's definitely something I'm looking forward to. And just going out there and just connecting with any quarterback that's going out there and throwing the ball. That's the most important thing this training camp."
In 2025, Jefferson barely broke 1,000 receiving yards. Since joining the Vikings, he has never failed to break that milestone, and it would be extremely disappointing if the 2026 NFL season were the first time it happens.
Having Kyler Murray available immediately raises the floor of a quarterback room that has only one other veteran on the roster. Although Carson Wentz could play well if needed, Minnesota will hope that J.J. McCarthy can take the next step in his development this offseason.
Watching the competition between Murray and McCarthy will be interesting. Although it is being billed as a true competition, most fans would be led to believe that the former Arizona Cardinals quarterback is the favorite because of his experience and the fact that McCarthy didn't look ready last year.
"It definitely would be great to have a quarterback, the same quarterback, for these next couple years, going down the line. But that's something that's very difficult to do in this league. But, for sure, to keep on that quarterback for these next couple years and build that relationship, and create that spark, that's that's definitely the plan."
Although the future is still wide open at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, this season will have either Kyler Murray or J.J. McCarthy under center. Hopefully, whoever the quarterback is will be able to get the ball to Justin Jefferson early and often.
