Justin Jefferson just showed the Vikings what makes him irreplaceable

Justin Jefferson's value to the Minnesota Vikings goes well beyond the highlight-reel catches. Training camp offered a glimpse at the other part of his job, with the star receiver mic'd up and coaching teammates through the small details that can decide whether a route creates separation.

Jefferson was actively coaching, paying attention to every detail when the younger receivers took their turns. He watched individual drills closely, encouraged clean work and corrected rookie Myles Price's footwork, like a player who takes the captain's patch seriously.

Jordan Addison gets the same access despite arriving as the No. 23 pick in 2023, one spot after Jefferson went No. 22 three years earlier. For a young receiver room, mentorship from the league's best route runner is about as good as camp resources get.

Jefferson focused on making every route look identical before the break. "They ain't gonna know if you wanna curl, go, post," he told Price, adding that the rookie's speed can make that disguise even tougher on defensive backs.

That advice gets at why Jefferson is so difficult to cover. Corners can't sit on one route when his release and early stem reveal so little, and teaching Price that habit now could help the rookie earn actual offensive snaps rather than living on the edge of the roster.

Jefferson liked the next rep. "Yes, better," he said before explaining that Price's transition had improved because he wasn't hopping up and dropping. 

At 27, Jefferson already owns 579 catches, 8,480 receiving yards and 42 touchdowns in six seasons. His career highs are 128 receptions and 1,809 yards in 2022, while his best touchdown total is 10, reached in both 2021 and 2024.

Those numbers and his contract make the latest trade chatter difficult to buy. Raiders insider Hondo Carpenter fueled speculation by suggesting Jefferson might be open to reuniting with Klint Kubiak, the Las Vegas Raiders' new head coach and Jefferson's offensive coordinator in Minnesota during the 2021 season.

Jefferson signed a four-year, $140 million extension in 2024 with $110 million guaranteed, keeping him under contract through 2028. Las Vegas would need Minnesota's cooperation, a massive trade package and room for that deal, while the Vikings would have to explain why they're shipping away the captain and best player on the roster.
