Outside of the competition itself, J.J. McCarthy’s move from franchise quarterback hopeful to training camp contestant is the Minnesota Vikings’ biggest summer storyline. After an injury-erased season and 10 uneven starts, the former No. 10 pick must prove he should keep a job fans assumed was his until Kyler Murray came along.
Murray’s arrival suddenly turned patience into a QB1 fight. Minnesota can’t afford a month-long quarterback audition with Justin Jefferson catching passes and Brian Flores running the defense.
All offseason, Kevin O’Connell has heard the premise that McCarthy might not get a fair shot. In typical coach-speak, his answer defended the quarterback’s timeline while leaving the competition open.

McCarthy lost his 2024 rookie season to a torn meniscus, then had 2025 interrupted by more injuries. O’Connell acknowledged the missed field time while explaining why Minnesota hasn’t discarded its original evaluation.

“I believe he’s a young, talented player with a ton of upside in front of him. And we can’t go backwards and change the past of maybe some of that development time that was lost either in year one or after getting off to a good start winning a divisional game on the road against the team that won the division in week one last year.”
McCarthy’s career line through 10 starts includes career highs of 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, a 57.6 completion percentage and a 72.6 passer rating. He also rushed for career highs of 181 yards and four touchdowns.
With only one played season, every total is technically a career high, though some are better described as areas for improvement.
O'Connell added that competition now becomes part of McCarthy’s repair work.
“So now what we’re trying to do is just make sure we're always being mindful of his individual development, where we think he is at and how we can help get him to a place through competition that will be a really good outcome for JJ and the Minnesota Vikings.”
McCarthy must show quicker processing, better ball security, and stronger command with Murray chasing the same job.
O’Connell stopped short of promising McCarthy anything.
“And it’s my job to make sure that we’re always doing what we think is best to win football games.”
While Murray kicked things off during Wednesday's practice, he and McCarthy are splitting first-team work, giving both quarterbacks a genuine chance to grab the job.
But as camps tend to go, one sharp series could crown a starter for the afternoon, while one interception could restart the entire debate.
