Kyler Murray has made a few splash plays in the early stages of training camp. They're the ones fans and the Minnesota Vikings' social media team always show, raising hype for what's to come.
But that's not quite the full picture.
There's a growing sense from those in attendance at camp that Murray hasn't exactly started on the front foot. The quarterback's performances are being described as inconsistent, with some even suggesting he is being outplayed by third-year pro J.J. McCarthy.

Murray might be taking some time to adjust. He's learning a new offense and developing chemistry with his new teammates after being released by the Arizona Cardinals this offseason. And these things are a gradual process rather than anything instantaneous.
He is still the frontrunner to be under center when the Vikings take on the Green Bay Packers in Week 1. But any talk that Murray has hit the ground running might be a little far-fetched.
This could also be a case of McCarthy making significant improvements. He hasn't had the best of luck since entering the league as a first-round pick, with a season-ending injury in Year 1 and a mixture of misfortune as an NFL sophomore. Competition has officially arrived, and it seems to be bringing out the best in the Michigan national champion.
The Vikings want this to be a genuine battle. There is also pressure to improve next season.
Murray's experience and proven game-changing capabilities when healthy have him in the driver's seat. McCarthy is also getting a lot of work with the first-string offense if the veteran arrival cannot meet expectations.

We're still early in camp. Head coach Kevin O'Connell had a timeline in mind for when his QB1 next season will be confirmed, but that wasn't disclosed publicly. The sooner that happens, the better, but unless Murray showcases the consistency needed, McCarthy will fancy his chances.
And this saga will drag on even longer.
There will be twists and turns. Murray will get more comfortable the longer we go into the summer, and he's got a supreme teacher in O'Connell helping him along the way.
Pressing the panic button would be foolish, but it's something for fans to monitor in the weeks ahead.
McCarthy won't give up without a fight, which should make them both better in the long run. But with so much at stake for the Vikings this season, Murray has to be better.
Otherwise, O'Connell has got a potential powder keg on his hands.
