After the last few days were filled with speculation about who would start at quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings in the team's upcoming Week 7 showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, Kevin O'Connell has provided an answer to all of those questions.
On Friday, O'Connell announced that Carson Wentz will make his fourth straight start under center for the Vikings this weekend when they take on the Eagles.
In addition, Minnesota's head coach revealed that rookie Max Brosmer will be the team's backup quarterback on Sunday, and J.J. McCarthy, who is still recovering from his ankle injury, will serve as the team's emergency No. 3 signal-caller.
Carson Wentz, not J.J. McCarthy, to start for Minnesota Vikings in Week 7 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Coming out of the bye, some were optimistic that McCarthy would be able to return to the starting lineup in Week 7 after injuring his ankle in the Vikings' second game of the season.
But as the week progressed and the second-year quarterback was a limited participant in practice while Wentz was a full participant in every practice session, the writing on the wall started to become obvious.
Even though McCarthy will officially be declared inactive on Sunday (he can still serve as the emergency No. 3 quarterback if inactive), there will probably still be some people who will twist Minnesota's decision and attempt to make it look like a benching.
But the fact is that O'Connell has made it extremely clear during the last few weeks that McCarthy's ankle needs to be 100 percent recovered or close to 100 percent in order for him to start again.
The young signal-caller told reporters earlier this week that his ankle is not 100 percent healed yet, so, unsurprisingly, he isn't starting on Sunday.
Instead, Vikings fans will get to watch Wentz start inside U.S. Bank Stadium for the second time this season, and hopefully, Sunday's results look similar to his first start in the building this year, when Minnesota pummeled the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 3.
