It's been a little more than a month since the Minnesota Vikings signed former New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones to their practice squad. Jones hasn't appeared in any games for the Vikings yet this season, but he's been on the sideline and traveling with the team for every contest since arriving in November.
With Minnesota heading into its final game of the 2024 regular season, some have been wondering if the team will add Jones to their active roster before they take the field for their first playoff matchup. On Monday, Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell discussed the possibility of that being something that actually happens in the near future.
"Yeah, we're gonna have some dialogue about that as far as the timing of it. Daniel's been quietly behind the scenes putting in some phenomenal work and Iām probably, more excited, as I told him the other day, more excited now than even as excited as I was to get him in here day one, just by what he's shown us already and so that's definitely something we're gonna talk about."
Even if he's activated, Daniel Jones still probably would not be QB2 for the Minnesota Vikings
Currently, Sam Darnold, Nick Mullens, and Brett Rypien are the three quarterbacks on Minnesota's active roster. If the Vikings wanted to add Jones to the active roster for the playoffs, he would likely take Rypien's place.
However, NFL rules allow for teams in the postseason to elevate players from the practice squad as many times as needed. There is no limit for this in the playoffs, unlike the regular season.
So, even if Minnesota leaves Jones on the practice squad, they can still elevate him to the active roster before a playoff game if they feel it's needed.
Basically, unless one of the current three quarterbacks on the Vikings' active roster goes down with an injury, there isn't a real need for the team to add Jones to the roster as they head into the postseason.
