The Minnesota Vikings have been aggressive in free agency this offseason and are likely not done building their roster for the 2025 NFL season. Although the first and second waves of free agency are complete, talented players are still looking for a contract.
Minnesota can still add some talent at multiple positions before training camp starts, but there are some experienced free agents who don't make a lot of sense for the Vikings to aggressively pursue this offseason.
Minnesota Vikings connected to big-name free agent (and it makes no sense)
Christian D'Andrea of USA Today's For The Win published an article on Thursday matching the 11 best remaining NFL free agents with teams where they should sign to optimize their 2025 season. The list included great wide receivers, Super Bowl-winning quarterbacks, and stellar cornerbacks.
It was surprising to see that D'Andrea linked former Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson to the Pittsburgh Steelers, New York Giants, and Minnesota Vikings.
"Wilson's scrambling is no longer the factor it once was and he may be an average quarterback over the course of a full season."Christian D'Andrea
While it's easy to see how the Minnesota Vikings would be a great landing place for Russell Wilson, figuring out why the Vikings would benefit from signing the 36-year-old quarterback when they are hitching their wagon to young passer J.J. McCarthy this season.
Russell Wilson would likely want a starting role wherever he lands or at least be able to compete for it. On the other hand, the Vikings won't want to overpay a veteran quarterback to act as a backup when they can use that salary cap space to build a team around McCarthy.
It seems like the Steelers aren't an option for Wilson anymore. The New York Giants recently signed Jameis Winston to compete against a potential rookie in training camp. There are still teams that need a quarterback and should be looking into Wilson's services.
At the top of that list are teams like the Tennessee Titans and Cleveland Browns. Those two franchises are desperate to find a quarterback this offseason and could do much worse than bringing Russell Wilson in for a year or two while they figure out a long-term answer at the position.
Unfortunately for Wilson, the Titans and Browns hold the No. 1 and No. 2 overall picks in the 2025 NFL Draft and could use those picks on a quarterback instead of signing a free agent. And the Minnesota Vikings are extremely unlikely to sign him unless he's willing to sign for a very small amount and accept a role as a backup. That situation seems like a huge longshot.
