The Minnesota Vikings have been a good team for a long time, but they have never won the big one. Despite four Super Bowl appearances, the team has failed to secure a Lombardi Trophy, and the last time they reached the big game was during the 1973 NFL season.
That feels like a long time ago, but sports have shown fans that droughts happen. In fact, the NBA just saw the New York Knicks defeat the San Antonio Spurs to win the NBA Championship for the first time since 1973.
If you believe in trends and history repeating, then this could be a fantastic year for the Vikings. Eight months after the Knicks won their last NBA title, the purple and gold played the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VIII.
With the New York Knicks winning the NBA Championship for the first time since 1973, Minnesota Vikings fans should hope history repeats itself for them as well
Although the Minnesota Vikings came up short in the 7-24 Super Bowl VIII matchup, it would be gigantic progress for the team to make the big game during the 2026 NFL season and would be a fantastic start to the tenure of new general manager Nolan Teasley.
It's not like there aren't pieces in place for the Vikings to be successful this season. They have a strong defense, talented skill players on offense, and a head coach who has been named Coach of the Year just a few seasons ago.
That 1973 Vikings team was special. Their 12-2 record was earned by multiple Pro Football Hall of Famers, including head coach Bud Grant, quarterback Fran Tarkenton, center Mick Tingelhoff, offensive tackle Ron Yary, the Purple People Eaters, and safety Paul Krause.
It would be a ton of fun if this year's Minnesota team could put together a special season that would be memorable for fans. Let's be honest, it has been a lot of heartbreak for fans of the purple and gold over the years, and it would be nice to see the team make it to the Super Bowl for the first time in the lifetime of many of the team's fans.
Of course, getting to the Super Bowl and winning the big game are two totally different things. But who knows, once you get to the game for the Lombardi Trophy, anything can happen. Hopefully, history repeats itself, but makes a small adjustment for the Minnesota Vikings this season.
