Unlike the other two teams in the NFC North, the coaching staffs of the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers haven't really gone through any notable changes this offseason.
Grant Udinski did recently leave his role as the Vikings assistant offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach to become the new offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars. But other than that, just about every member of Minnesota's 2024 coaching staff will be back for the 2025 campaign.
As for the Packers, they replaced some assistant coaches who left for other jobs in the NFL or retired and also changed the roles of some other members of their 2024 staff. None of these coaching decisions are anything that should cause the Vikings to worry, though, especially the one they revealed on Friday.
Minnesota Vikings won't lose sleep over Green Bay Packers promoting failed offensive coordinator
After getting fired from his previous two offensive coordinator jobs in the NFL, the Packers have reportedly named Luke Getsy a senior offensive assistant, according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero on Friday.
The Packers are very familiar with Getsy, as he has already spent time on the team's staff for a total of seven seasons. Most recently, he spent the second half of the 2024 campaign with Green Bay as a defensive consultant.
In case anyone was wondering why Getsy only spent a portion of the 2024 season with the Packers, well, he became available after the Las Vegas Raiders fired him after just nine games as the team's offensive coordinator.
Before landing with the Raiders, Getsy spent two years as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator before that franchise ultimately decided to move on from him.
With Getsy calling the plays, the Bears did have the NFL's top-ranked rushing offense in 2022, but they ranked 32nd in passing and 19th in points per offensive drive that season as well. Then, in 2023, Chicago still had one of the league's worst passing offenses and the team scored under 20 points in nine of their 17 games.
Somehow, Las Vegas decided to give Getsy another shot as an offensive coordinator this past season, and it didn't take long for them to regret it. In his nine games with the Raiders, the team ranked last in the NFL in rushing yards per attempt, 26th in net yards gained per pass attempt, and 26th in points scored per game.
For whatever reason, the Packers believe Getsy adds value to their staff. Could it be a decision that blows up in Green Bay's face? It's possible, and if that happens, then the Vikings and the rest of the NFL will be there to point and laugh.
