Minnesota Vikings safety Harrison Smith agreed to return for a 15th season this past weekend, and it has plenty of implications.
Getting back one of the most impactful players on Brian Flores’s defense is a big boost going into a Week 1 matchup with the Green Bay Packers, but it also gives Smith the opportunity to improve on his Hall of Fame resume with one play that could help him join a group that includes Charles Woodson, Ronde Barber, and Larry Wilson.
Smith enters the 2026 season with 39 career interceptions, which places him one behind Ed Sharockman for third in franchise history.
In addition to his next pick being the 40th of his career, it would also help Smith, who has 21.5 career sacks, become the fourth player in NFL history to record 40 interceptions and 20 sacks during his career, joining Woodson, Barber, and Wilson.
In terms of franchise history, Smith may be too far away from Paul Krause’s 53 interceptions and Bobby Bryant’s 51 interceptions to overtake them this season.
But by joining a group of three Hall of Famers, he has a chance to enhance his legacy, which could be even better with a successful comeback season.

Smith’s return is high on nostalgia but comes with legitimate concerns. While he returned for his 14th season a year ago, he battled an illness during training camp that kept him from making his season debut until a Week 3 win over the Cincinnati Bengals.
While Smith hit the field, he didn’t play over 50 snaps in a game until after the Vikings’ Week 6 bye and posted a 58.6 overall grade that ranked 62nd out of 95 safeties, according to PFF, from Weeks 3 to 13.
With Smith also agreeing to a one-year, $12.25 million contract that can be worth up to $16.25 million through incentives, it leaves the Vikings with just $8.7 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.
While the Vikings aren’t likely to make a big-ticket move during the season, the limited money available could hurt their chances of adding at the trade deadline or acquiring a player in case of injury.
But what Vikings fans are hoping for is the version of Smith that finished last season, when he recorded 15 total tackles, a sack, two tackles for loss, a pair of interceptions, and six pass breakups in the final five games.
He also earned a positive review from PFF, which gave him an 80.3 overall grade that ranked eighth among 98 qualifying safeties in the final five weeks.
Add the fact that he acts as a coach on the field who gets the defense in position to make plays, and Smith’s 14 years of experience should be a benefit to a safety room that is young but has plenty of promise moving forward.

With the team benefits aside, this season could play a big role in Smith’s legacy. While he likely has a spot in the Vikings’ Ring of Honor locked up, a spot in Canton could also be clinched if he plays as he did over the final five games.
That legacy could also extend into future years with the state of the safety position in Minnesota.
Jay Ward showed plenty of improvement over the final five games a year ago, and the Vikings added even more youth by taking Jakobe Thomas in the third round of April’s draft and picking up Jacob Thomas as an undrafted free agent.
Jakobe Thomas also expressed eagerness to learn from Smith during rookie minicamp, and having him in the same position room could expedite the mental side of his game, even if he’s not getting onto the field in his rookie year.
With the chance to join elite company and help the Vikings improve for the future, Smith’s legacy could grow exponentially if his comeback is a success. And it could also be one play away from cementing it on a national level and becoming one of the greatest defensive players to play the game.
