For the last few weeks, Minnesota Vikings third-year quarterback J.J. McCarthy has been mentioned in multiple trade rumors after losing the battle for the team's QB1 job to Kyler Murray in the summer.
Much of it has just been speculation, but now there appears to be some legitimate steam about another team actually considering a trade for McCarthy.
Following the season-ending knee injury suffered by Jaxson Dart last Monday, the New York Giants have been mulling over their options and figuring out if they want to add another member to a quarterback room that currently consists of Jameis Winston and Jake Haener.
On Sunday, ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo revealed that McCarthy is reportedly among the list of quarterbacks New York is thinking about adding in the near future.
Specifically about Minnesota's current No. 3 quarterback, the report mentioned that the Giants "have been doing legwork on McCarthy, making sure they can make an informed decision."
When could the New York Giants potentially make a deal with the Minnesota Vikings for J.J. McCarthy?
According to Rapoport, New York is "expected to acquire another quarterback probably early this week," and who that is will depend on how well Winston plays in the Giants' game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
In addition to McCarthy, free-agent Jimmy Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew II of the Arizona Cardinals, Mac Jones of the San Francisco 49ers, and Justin Fields of the Kansas City Chiefs are also on the list of quarterbacks the Giants are currently considering, according to the report from ESPN and NFL Network.
Whatever New York ends up doing will, of course, come down to how much they will have to give up.
Of the signal-callers who are reportedly on the Giants' radar, Jones is easily the one who would likely cost the most to acquire, in terms of draft capital.
The 49ers are not exactly known for being a team that is known for its durability, so parting with Brock Purdy's backup would likely require New York to give up at least one future Day 2 draft pick.
Garoppolo would be the easiest to add since he's a free agent, so he can sign with any team who gives him an offer, and he only made a little more than $3 million when he was with the Los Angeles Rams last season.
Minshew and Fields could probably be acquired with a late Day 3 draft selection, but both have contracts that expire after the 2026 season.
As for McCarthy, he is still on his rookie deal, and it includes a fifth-year option. So, he could potentially still be under contract until the 2029 offseason.
If the Giants want to add a quarterback who could potentially remain with the team after the 2026 season, then McCarthy is probably the guy they should attempt to acquire.
What that would cost for that to happen is something that New York, and probably Minnesota, are currently trying to figure out.
