After a long offseason, a joke of a quarterback competition, and a quiet preseason, Kyler Murray's much-anticipated Minnesota Vikings debut is just days away.
All eyes will be on the former No. 1 pick as he attempts to prove that he's the quarterback to get Kevin O'Connell's Vikings over the hump.
But while this may be his first game in purple and gold, this matchup carries plenty of history.
The Vikings will take on the Green Bay Packers, who hired Jonathan Gannon as their defensive coordinator this offseason. Gannon was Murray's head coach with the Arizona Cardinals and made the decision to unofficially bench Murray in the back half of the 2025 season.
This will be Murray's first opportunity for revenge.

Murray's "soft benching" was one of the NFL's most poorly disguised stories of the 2025 season. After a mediocre start to the year, the former Cardinals QB suffered a foot injury in Week 5. While he was expected to be out for a few weeks, the Cardinals seemed ready to put him back in the starting lineup when he returned.
Gannon even told reporters soon after the injury, "If he's healthy enough to play, he'll play."
But as the weeks dragged on, it became clear that Gannon and the Cardinals had no interest in bringing Murray back. They rode out the rest of the season with Jacoby Brissett as their starter, putting Murray on IR.
While he wasn't officially released until March, his time as Arizona's franchise quarterback ended much earlier. He wasn't truly given a chance to turn things around.
Now, he gets his shot at revenge. There may not be a quarterback in the NFL more familiar with Gannon's system than the new Vikings signal-caller. He spent every practice of the last three years going up against the Packers defensive coordinator.
Of course, the inverse is true, too. Gannon has seen more of Murray than any defensive coordinator in the league. He'll know exactly how to target his weaknesses on Sunday afternoon.
Murray and Gannon have a mutual respect for one another. Murray even supported Gannon after he was fired by the Cardinals, saying, "My guy, genuinely loved going to war with you."
But that respect will turn into competition in Week 1, as the player and coach look to exploit each other's weaknesses for the first time.
