All signs are pointing to the Minnesota Vikings adding another veteran quarterback to their roster to compete with J.J. McCarthy before the 2026 season.
Who exactly that is going to be is something that still has to be sorted out.
For now, all anyone can do is offer their opinion on some of the different options the Vikings could pursue this offseason, and most recently, legendary former Minnesota defensive end Jared Allen added his thoughts to the conversation.
During an appearance on the "Up & Adams" show on Wednesday, Allen talked about a quarterback who the Vikings could add this year who would likely cause Minnesota fans to rip the hair out of their heads.
"I'll be honest. I think, people are probably going to hate me for this. I think Tua [Tagovailoa] is actually an interesting option.
I mean, the dude won the championships in college, right? He shows signs, and if you [pair him with] Kevin [O'Connell] with that offense, you get a good offensive line, [it might work].”
Jared Allen calls Miami Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa an "interesting option" for the Minnesota Vikings
While Allen argued that Tagovailoa would be an "interesting option" for Minnesota because of his past success in college, he would definitely be "interesting" for the Vikings for another completely different reason.
See, Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Tagovailoa used to work together when Flores was Miami's head coach in 2020 and 2021. After the Dolphins fired Flores, Tagovailoa made claims about receiving poor treatment from the Vikings' defensive coordinator during their time together in Miami, and Flores later apologized for anything he did that had a negative impact on the quarterback.
Despite the apology, it seems safe to say that Flores would never like to work with Tagovailoa again, which means that the chances of the current Dolphins signal-caller ending up in Minnesota at some point this year are near zero.
Besides that, Tagovailoa is also coming off a 2025 season in which he was benched by Miami in the middle of the campaign because he wasn't playing well. During his final nine starts of 2025, he completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 1,652 yards (183.6 per game), 10 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and an 81.0 rating.
Tagovailoa also has a concerning history of concussions throughout his NFL career, and if the Vikings are going to release center Ryan Kelly this offseason in part for concussion-related reasons, it wouldn't make any sense to add someone like the Dolphins quarterback to the mix.
So, even though Allen thinks Tagovailoa might be a good option for Minnesota to consider adding this year, thankfully, he's not a quarterback that the team will likely pursue.
