The Minnesota Vikings opted out of the Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave business amid a slew of cost-cutting moves this offseason. However, the club's failure to replace them in free agency has left a gaping hole in the heart of their defensive line.

Allen and Hargrave are accomplished veterans and remain effective contributors. Seeing them both land opportunities elsewhere shortly after being released by the Vikings speaks to the talent walking out the door. Meanwhile, rising fan favorite Jalen Redmond currently sits atop Minnesota's depth chart with little behind him following their exit.

Not filling Allen and Hargrave's void via the open market puts a significant onus on Minnesota to do so early in the 2026 NFL Draft. With their departures in mind, expect the Vikings to target a defensive tackle with this year's No. 18 overall selection.

Unfortunately for the Vikings, there isn't a clear-cut prospect they should be hoping falls to them in the first round. However, to their delight, there figure to be several intriguing options to choose from.

Ohio State star Kayden McDonald has generated buzz throughout the evaluation process. He followed up helping the Buckeyes win a National Championship as a sophomore by reaching new personal heights as a junior. His strong efforts, specifically as a run-stuffer, earned him Consensus All-American honors in 2025.

Caleb Banks of Florida put himself on the Vikings' radar with an impressive showing at the Scouting Combine — before suffering a broken foot. His unique blend of size and athleticism can be incredibly valuable in the right situation. Assuming health isn't an issue, he can develop into a legitimate difference-maker under defensive coordinator Brian Flores' tutelage.

Lee Hunter out of Texas Tech is also a name to watch. Joining the Red Raiders proved to be a great decision for all parties involved. He was voted to the AP All-American Third Team in his lone campaign with the program, thanks to an elite combination of power and length.

Then there's Peter Woods from Clemson. The school has a good hit rate of defensive tackles who have made the successful leap from college to the pros. He has the explosiveness and upside to join the list.
