Vikings have one season to avoid a Justin Jefferson nightmare

It may not appear obvious at first glance, but the Minnesota Vikings’ offseason has been all about Justin Jefferson. After a year where Jefferson got washed out by poor quarterback play, the Vikings went out and signed Kyler Murray, setting the stage for a heavyweight battle with J.J. McCarthy for the starting quarterback job during training camp.

If the winner of that battle gets Jefferson back to his dominant form, this offseason will be a success. If it doesn’t work out, it could have dire consequences and could even result in the Vikings considering trading their superstar, according to our very own Adam Patrick during the latest episode of "The Viking Age Podcast."

“He’s 27, which is very young in our real life, but for receivers, is getting closer to the end of his prime.

He might still have four or five years left. Who knows? But going with the Bill Belichick philosophy of moving on before it’s too late, [that] would be kind of the way of approaching this.

...I know he’s one of the best receivers in the NFL. But the smart teams in the league today take advantage of players when they are still at a high value.

You could probably still get a first, maybe two firsts for him next year, depending on how he plays, and then use that to build from the draft, which is what the Vikings hired Nolan Teasley to do, and then get back to being a competitive team and winning in the playoffs.”

Justin Jefferson’s future with Minnesota Vikings could be decided next season

The idea of trading Jefferson will make the blood pressure of Vikings fans skyrocket and fulfill the prophecy of endless speculative TikTok videos.

Jefferson is the face of the franchise and has caught 579 passes for 8,480 yards and 42 touchdowns during his career. But the problem is that the Vikings do not have a playoff win to show for it.

A lot of that isn’t Jefferson’s fault, although he’s been limited to 12 catches for 105 scoreless yards in two career playoff games.

It’s also an indictment of front offices led by Rick Spielman and Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, whose teams had serious flaws around him. But there is some precedent from Teasley’s time with the Seattle Seahawks.

DK Metcalf requested a trade after several mediocre years with the Seahawks last offseason, and instead of patching it over with a new contract, Teasley was a lead negotiator in a trade with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Seahawks received a 2025 second-round pick and a seventh-round pick back in the deal. But Seattle used the second-rounder to trade up and select safety Nick Emmanwori, who was a critical part of the Seahawks' run to the Super Bowl last season.

Another factor to consider is Jefferson’s contract. Jefferson is signed through the 2028 season, but the Vikings may need to renegotiate his contract with a $49.4 million cap hit for the 2027 season, according to Over The Cap.

Jefferson also runs out of money after the 2027 season, which could make a trip to the negotiating table around the corner.

Dealing Jefferson could get the Vikings a haul, and more than Metcalf, after A.J. Brown was traded to the New England Patriots in exchange for a 2028 first-round pick this summer.

It could also become a necessity if the Vikings don’t win in 2026, leaving Jefferson to have serious questions about the franchise and let them know he’s not interested in an extension.

This can all go away if the Vikings have a big year and Murray or McCarthy turns out to be the answer to their problems.

But if they don’t, it could open the possibility that Jefferson could be playing his last year in Minnesota and open the door for Teasley to make his first massive move as general manager.
