Sunday’s opener against Green Bay will give the Minnesota Vikings either valuable early control of the NFC North race or a problem they must fix immediately in Chicago. One game won’t define the season, but a divisional home game carries consequences that a loss to an AFC opponent simply doesn’t.
Minnesota follows its Packers Week 1 matchup with a trip to Soldier Field. Win both and Kevin O’Connell’s team starts 2-0 overall and inside the division. Lose Sunday, then fall to Chicago, and the Vikings leave September’s second weekend chasing two rivals.
A win wouldn’t prove Kyler Murray has fixed everything. A loss wouldn’t prove Minnesota started the wrong quarterback. But the Vikings’ early-season schedule certainly puts a premium on beating Green Bay at home.
Minnesota Vikings can seize early NFC North leverage against Green Bay Packers
Green Bay has defeated Minnesota seven times since 2019, more than any other NFL team. Detroit ranks second with six wins, according to the Packers’ official game notes. The Packers haven’t owned Minnesota, but they’ve beaten the Vikings often enough to make defending home field especially valuable.
The first divisional tiebreaker is head-to-head record, followed by division record. A Minnesota victory guarantees at least a split with Green Bay and makes a season sweep possible. It also forces the Packers to spend the next four months knowing they must win the Lambeau Field rematch to draw even.
The Vikings won the previous meeting 16-3 but with an asterisk. Green Bay rested several starters before the playoffs and used Clayton Tune at quarterback, while Minnesota finished a disappointing 9-8 season with its fifth consecutive victory. The defense allowed only 121 yards, but Sunday’s version of Jordan Love presents a considerably different assignment.
Minnesota also needs evidence that its offseason changes work under real pressure. O’Connell must show his rebuilt running game can support Murray, while Brian Flores gets an immediate chance to attack Green Bay’s remodeled offensive line with disguised pressure packages.
Lose, and the season remains recoverable. But Minnesota would arrive at Soldier Field needing to avoid an 0-2 divisional start, and “it’s early” would start wearing thin in a hurry.
