Justin Jefferson trade chatter has long lived in the nervous corner of the Minnesota Vikings fan base, where every stretch of instability has fans wondering how long their star receiver will remain patient. This offseason, though, the anxiety has enough logic behind it to warrant a conversation, even though the trade rumors are running well ahead of anything happening inside the building.
Jefferson, now 27, has 579 catches, 8,480 yards and 42 touchdowns across six seasons. His career highs are 128 receptions and 1,809 yards in 2022, plus 10 touchdowns in 2024. Those numbers explain why his four-year, $140 million extension was obvious and why any trade discussion sounds ridiculous at first.
Minnesota’s passing plan has been much less settled since Kirk Cousins tore his Achilles in 2023. Jefferson has played in two playoff games, with the Vikings losing both, and watched another round of quarterback questions pop up. Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy give the offense options, but neither currently represents the proven, long-term answer the Vikings need.

Judd Zulgad addressed that tension while answering an anxious fan on SKOR North’s “Purple Daily” podcast. “Now Justin has been a good soldier through everything so far,” Zulgad said before wondering when Jefferson eventually asks, “What’s the plan here?”
Jefferson hasn’t requested a trade, and no active or imminent plan exists to move him. Team leadership views him as a foundational piece. Zulgad’s point hits because patience isn’t unlimited for an elite receiver entering his late 20s, particularly when his 2025 line dipped to 84 catches, 1,048 yards and two touchdowns during more instability.
Nolan Teasley adds another wrinkle because the new general manager comes from Seattle, where he helped trade DK Metcalf to the Steelers for assets before a championship season. “I’m not saying DK Metcalf is the caliber receiver of Justin Jefferson,” Zulgad said. He was explaining Teasley’s willingness to make an unpopular move when the return fits a larger roster plan.
Jefferson’s guaranteed money also begins dwindling in 2027, which gives future speculation an easy calendar hook. Hypothetical links to the Las Vegas Raiders or Buffalo Bills remain offseason rumors, not reporting from inside the building, and Minnesota added Murray partly in hopes of avoiding further quarterback questions.
The start of the 2026 regular season should be telling. For now, though, Jefferson is under contract through 2028, hasn’t asked out, and the Vikings will spend the season trying to restore his usual place among the NFL’s most productive receivers.
