Earlier this offseason, the Minnesota Vikings announced that the team was parting ways with general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. That left the position vacant heading into the 2026 NFL Draft, which would not work.
The Vikings decided to fill that role on an interim basis with Rob Brzezinski, a longtime part of the franchise that is best known for his ability to manipulate the salary cap and work with player personnel.
Minnesota also shared that Brzezinski would hold down that role until after the draft. At that point, the purple and gold would search for their next general manager, something that is rarely done in the NFL.
With the 2026 NFL Draft complete, it's time for the Minnesota Vikings to find their next general manager
Now that the draft is over and free agency is slowing down, the Vikings announced on the team's official website on Wednesday that the search for the next general manager is underway, but also included some more interesting information.
"With the conclusion of the 2026 NFL Draft, our search for the next general manager of the Minnesota Vikings is underway. This will be a thorough and deliberate process led by ownership, with support from a small internal advisory committee of senior leaders.
We have also engaged respected firm TurnkeyZRG to assist in conducting a wide-ranging search that includes experienced football executives, emerging candidates and individuals with diverse professional backgrounds.
Our focus is to identify a decisive leader with a clear vision for team building, strong communication skills and the ability to build alignment across an organization.
Out of respect for all involved, we do not intend to publicly announce candidates and will provide further comment when the search is complete."
The Vikings say it will be a "thorough and deliberate process," but add that the team does "not intend to publicly announce candidates" during that process. That means it will essentially be a closed-door situation.
This is frustrating for fans who want to feel like a part of the process or follow the hiring procedure closely. It should also make fans wonder if there is one particular candidate who might already be a favorite for the job.
NFL Media's Tom Pelissero followed up on that statement with a post on X, stating that current interim GM Rob Brzezinski is interested in the full-time role.
Considering Brzezinski was instrumental to the releases, signings, and draft process for the Vikings this offseason, he should be considered the favorite for the job. While there are bound to be a few other candidates, they will have a disadvantage considering the interim GM's experience.
However, this will be a situation that Minnesota fans will want to follow closely. Although expectations might be low for the team in 2026, according to recent power rankings, that doesn't mean that the purple and gold can't be contenders with their bolstered defense and an established quarterback like Kyler Murray to help the offense be more consistent.
Even in a challenging NFC North division, this is far from a rebuilding year for the organization.
