One of the most worrisome parts of the Minnesota Vikings this season has been the disappointment in the running game.
The Vikings are averaging just 102.3 yards per game on the ground, ranking 24th in the NFL. Jordan Mason leads the team in rushing with 659 yards and six touchdowns. Right behind Mason in rushing are Aaron Jones (410 yards and one touchdown) and J.J. McCarthy (154 yards and three touchdowns).
In a season when Minnesota needed its running game most to help its young quarterback, it hasn't gone the way they wanted. That doesn't mean there isn't an easy solution to the problem that they can solve in the offseason.
Minnesota Vikings have one perfect option to potentially replace Aaron Jones
Bleacher Report's Alex Kay recently looked at the best options out there for New York Jets running back Breece Hall, who is set to be a free agent in the offseason. Kay is looking at the Vikings as one of five teams that would make sure to land the running back.
"With starting back Aaron Jones on the wrong side of 30 and having missed a third of the campaign after starting all 17 contests in 2024, there's a decent chance Minnesota moves on during the offseason. The team would save over $7 million with the cut and has Jordan Mason is waiting in the wings to help soften the blow.
Despite a torn ACL that derailed the back half of an Offensive Rookie of the Year-worthy season, availability has been one of Hall's strong suits. He returned from that knee injury in rapid fashion and went on appear in all 17 games the following season. He only missed one contest last year and has remained healthy throughout the current campaign.
That combination of skill and availability is rare in the modern NFL, making Hall a fantastic choice for the Vikings (or any other RB-needy squad) to target in free agency."
Hall is having a decent season for the Jets despite the team's mess in 2025. He's averaging 4.2 yards per carry, rushing for 900 yards and catching for another 323 yards with four total touchdowns.
New York might not be able to convince Hall to return, given the franchise's current mess, but a young, promising team like the Vikings could be enticing enough for him to join. It would require the Vikings to make a move on their current roster before signing him.
While Vikings fans can appreciate what Jones has done for the team this season, given that he is over 30 and being injury-prone, it might be time to let him go. If Minnesota decided to let Jones walk, it would save $7 million.
That would open the door to sign the 24-year-old Hall and have him team up with Mason in the backfield. They would make for the perfect duo and complement each other well.
This is just one of many moves the team has to make in the offseason, but Hall can make a huge difference in this offense that needs versatility in the backfield.
