Vikings urged to take $13.7 million risk on five-time Pro Bowl defender

After trading away edge rusher Jonathan Greenard, there is still a void at the position that needs to be filled for the Minnesota Vikings to support top guys like Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner.

Luckily for the Vikings, there are still plenty of options out there at edge rusher as they have to find the right guy. Bleacher Report writer Alex Kay might have a solution in mind to help with the depth concerns, as he included Joey Bosa as one of the big-name free agents he's surprised that are still available, with the Vikings being named as a potential landing spot.

"Working against Bosa is a glut of serviceable edge rushing talent lingering on the open market, but the 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year stands as a cut above his unemployed peers. Whether a team plans to use him as a rotational depth option or a higher-volume starter, Bosa still provides enough speed, power and skill to move the needle for any defense ahead of his 11th NFL season."

Should the Minnesota Vikings consider bringing in Joey Bosa in 2026?

The talent is there with Bosa, as he's been to the Pro Bowl five times and has racked up 77 sacks in his career. His biggest problem has been availability and playing time, as three times in his 10-year career, he has played in fewer than 10 games in a season.

Last year was the first season he played without being a member of the Los Angeles Chargers; instead, he played for the Buffalo Bills. He got five sacks in 15 games, showing improvement with staying healthy and being more of a rotational player versus an every-down edge rusher.

The Minnesota Vikings need somebody who can come in off the bench, play 15-20 snaps a game in the rotation, and pressure the quarterback on third down. Ginkel and Turner are going to be the starters no matter who Minnesota brings in at the position, if they decide to do so.

Plus, Bosa has become more one-dimensional in his later years, purely a pass rusher and nothing more. Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores wouldn't ask too much from him except to just pressure the quarterback when they need him to.

One concern with Bosa is his cost, as Spotrac estimates his average market value at $13.7 million. The question the franchise would have to ask itself is whether he would be worth that kind of money or if they can negotiate a lower rate for the year.

Where the Vikings need to improve in 2026 is replacing Greenard as the veteran presence at edge rusher. Bosa would be the perfect option for them as long as he can work with them on the contract.
