When the Minnesota Vikings announced that there would be a competition to decide who the starting quarterback for the 2026 NFL season would be, many fans and experts were skeptical about how true that statement would be.
Although the Vikings used a first-round draft pick on University of Michigan standout J.J. McCarthy, the National Champion has struggled to show the ability to be a franchise passer for the purple and gold.
Signing former Arizona Cardinals first overall draft pick Kyler Murray changed everything. Would the team really sign a 28-year-old with 87 career starts and a 121 to 60 touchdown to interception ratio to be McCarthy's backup and mentor?
Betting lines suggest that the quarterback battle for the Minnesota Vikings heading into the 2026 NFL season isn't much of a battle at all.
It seems as though very few people are buying the idea of the Minnesota Vikings having a true competition for the starting quarterback job. Most seem to assume that the job is Kyler Murray's to lose, and McCarthy would have to show incredible progress to be considered for the role.
It will be interesting to see who is under center when the Vikings take the field in Week 1 against the Green Bay Packers. If betting lines are any indication, Purple Daily's Declan Goff showed just how little people believe in this competition in a recent post on X.

JJ McCarthy: 14.29%
Carson Wentz: 1.41% pic.twitter.com/qepwllAQY5
Not only is Kyler Murray the favorite to be the Vikings' starting quarterback in Week 1, but it isn't even close. Murray at -1000 is all fans need to know, and seeing J.J. McCarthy at +600 and Carson Wentz at +7000 are significant long shots.
Interestingly, neither Max Brosmer nor Cooper Rush is among the Minnesota quarterbacks given odds to start Week 1, but Wentz technically having a shot means that there are people out there who believe neither Murray nor McCarthy will win the job.
There is still a lot of time for the Minnesota Vikings to sort out their quarterback situation, but it is a decision that will have a massive impact on the upcoming season. If head coach Kevin O'Connell makes the wrong call, it could be a disaster for a roster loaded with talent and a franchise that recently hired a new general manager. It makes sense that the purple and gold don't want to rush into committing to one particular quarterback, but protecting whichever quarterback doesn't get the job seems like an unnecessary move for the organization.
