On Friday, the Miami Dolphins and veteran wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. agreed to go their separate ways with four weeks left in the 2024 regular season. Unsurprisingly, some have already been wondering if the Minnesota Vikings will attempt to add Beckham to their roster now that he's available.
It seems easy to dismiss this possibility, especially since he only caught a total of nine passes for 55 yards in nine games with the Dolphins this year. But Beckham has connections to multiple members of the Vikings, and him signing with the purple and gold wouldn't be as shocking as some might assume.
Minnesota is always looking for new ways to improve its roster, and while the 32-year-old pass-catcher didn't do much during his time with Miami this season, he might be able to make an impact for the Vikings in ways that go beyond his production on the field.
History with Kevin O'Connell and Justin Jefferson could lead to Odell Beckham Jr. joining Minnesota Vikings
Prior to landing with the Dolphins earlier this year, Beckham spent half a season with the Los Angeles Rams back in 2021. He ended up playing a significant role in the Rams winning the Super Bowl that year, and coincidentally, his offensive coordinator during his time with Los Angeles was none other than current Minnesota head coach Kevin O'Connell.
O'Connell and Beckham had success during their time together with the Rams with the receiver accumulating 48 catches for 593 yards and seven touchdowns in 12 games with Los Angeles (including the playoffs).
Would the Vikings' head coach be interested in teaming back up with Beckham to see if they can win a Super Bowl together again?
Then there's Beckham's history with Minnesota wide receiver Justin Jefferson. The two of them both spent their college careers at LSU, and earlier this year, Jefferson revealed that Beckham has had a big influence on his football career.
Adding the former Dolphins receiver at this point wouldn't be done with the expectation of having him come in and make a major impact on the offense. For a team like the Vikings who have Jefferson and Jordan Addison at the top of their wide receiver depth chart, Beckham is someone who would be brought in to help improve the team's depth before heading into the playoffs.
Adding him is also the type of low-risk, high-reward move that Minnesota general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah has made throughout his tenure with the franchise.
The Vikings have already helped a number of players get their careers back on track during O'Connell's time with the team, and Beckham might want to be the next.
