The 2025 NFL Draft is less than a month away and the Minnesota Vikings have worked to assemble a competitive roster for the upcoming season. Looking up and down the list of names., there aren't many major holes left to fill.
Still, the biggest topic of conversation for the Vikings is the backup quarterback job. Last year, the team was fortunate enough to have Sam Darnold when an injury sidelined J.J. McCarthy, but Minnesota doesn't have a guy like that on the roster at the moment.
Unless expectations are high for Brett Rypien, the Vikings are likely to add an experienced quarterback who is a fringe starter as insurance for McCarthy and to act as a mentor to the young passer.
There are some options in free agency. Minnesota has been linked to quarterbacks like Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Tannehill, but there is a new option on the table that the purple and gold should consider.
The Minnesota Vikings should call about quarterback Sam Howell
According to Jeremy Fowler and Brady Henderson at ESPN, the Seattle Seahawks are open to trading quarterback Sam Howell. Although he doesn't have the experience of someone like Rodgers or Tannehill, he is an interesting option for the Minnesota Vikings.
The Seahawks are ready to roll with Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback in 2025 and recently signed Drew Lock to be his backup. Now, that would leave former Vikings quarterback Jaren Hall as their third quarterback if they decide to trade Howell.
24 year old Sam Howell was a fifth-round pick of the Washington Commanders in 2022 and started 17 games for them in 2023. The next offseason, he was traded to the Seahawks where he only played 25 offensive snaps.
In 2023, Howell led the NFL in pass attempts with 612 while being sacked a league-most 65 times and throwing 21 interceptions. Despite that, the former North Carolina standout has shown some flashes that would make him an interesting option to back up J.J. McCarthy in Minnesota.
Of course, there is a chance that Seattle would rather hold on to Sam Howell and have him compete with Drew Lock for the Seahawks' backup quarterback job instead of receiving mid to late round draft compensation. But if he is on the trade block, the Minnesota Vikings should give them a call to inquire about his services for the 2025 NFL season.
