Unfortunately, Minnesota Vikings fans are used to the type of gut-punch the franchise handed to them on Tuesday when it was revealed that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will be out of action for the next few weeks after he undergoes surgery to repair a knee injury.

Despite the callus that Vikings fans have built up over the years from news like this, many are still disappointed, especially after how well McCarthy played in his preseason debut this past Saturday. But on Tuesday, the rookie quarterback did his best to help Minnesota fans cheer up with a post on his X account that sounds pretty optimistic.

J.J. McCarthy the latest Minnesota Vikings QB to suffer a knee injury

As it was mentioned previously, no fan base in the NFL might be better prepared to deal with the news of McCarthy's injury than Minnesota's.

Just in the last two decades, Vikings fans have seen some of the team's most notable quarterbacks suffer career-altering knee injuries, including Daunte Culpepper, Teddy Bridgewater, and Sam Bradford. Even non-quarterbacks like Adrian Peterson, Dalvin Cook, and Chad Greenway all dealt with significant knee injuries during their Minnesota careers.

McCarthy's injury certainly isn't as serious as the ones suffered by those mentioned above, but it's still completely fine for Vikings fans to feel disappointed about Tuesday's news.

Luckily, McCarthy's injury isn't expected to keep him sidelined for the entire 2024 campaign, and Minnesota had been preparing to start veteran Sam Darnold at quarterback for the first few weeks of the regular season anyway.

If there was ever a time for McCarthy to be sidelined with a minor knee injury, the first half of his rookie year would be it. Yes, he'll miss reps in practice, but judging from how deep he buried his nose in the Vikings' playbook this offseason, he's still probably going to continue to learn as much as he possibly can about the team's offense while he's out of action.
