Vikings get awful J.J. McCarthy injury news as QB could spend months on sideline
By Mike Luciano
The Minnesota Vikings may not have planned on starting rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy to begin the 2024 season, but that doesn't change the fact that he remains the future of this team. Even as he gestates behind Sam Darnold, McCarthy's exceptional accuracy will (hopefully) bring about a new era of Vikings football.
After lighting it up in his preseason debut, fans were eager to see what the former Michigan man would do next. It took only a few days for all of that optimism to be sandblasted away, as McCarthy has come down with what could be a very concerning knee injury.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed that McCarthy has a torn meniscus in his knee that will likely keep him out for the start of the regular season. The severity of his injury will be determined by the doctors' decision to either trim the meniscus or repair it fully.
If the trim option is chosen, McCarthy will likely miss a few weeks to start the season. If the other way is deemed to be the only viable path forward, McCarthy could be out for several months. McCarthy hasn't even played a regular season game, and injury problems are already mounting.
Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy tears meniscus, could miss significant time
After an early interception, McCarthy lit up the Las Vegas Raiders' defense in their preseason tilt. McCarthy finished the day with 11 of his 17 passes completed for 188 yards (11.1 yards per attempt) and a pair of touchdown passes.
Darnold, who was going to be the Week 1 starter regardless of McCarthy's health, will lead Minnesota into battle against the New York Giants. Backups Nick Mullens and Jaren Hall had been fighting for a roster spot, but the McCarthy injury could open up room on the final roster for both quarterbacks.
While McCarthy will eventually get on the field and dazzle Vikings fans, a knee injury striking a particularly mobile quarterback is one step below a living nightmare. For the sake of the franchise, fans must hope McCarthy's injury doesn't impact his play when he returns to full health.
