Vikings News: Minnesota adds another CB with first pick on Day 3
By Adam Patrick
With their first selection on Day 3 of the 2023 NFL Draft, the Minnesota Vikings used a fourth-round pick on former LSU cornerback Jay Ward.
On Friday, the Minnesota Vikings ended Day 2 of the 2023 NFL Draft by using a third-round pick on former USC cornerback Mekhi Blackmon. On Saturday, the Vikings began the third and final day of this year's draft by adding another young corner to their roster in former LSU defender Jay Ward.
Understandably, Minnesota clearly didn't feel comfortable about their cornerback depth heading into this year's draft. So even with Andrew Booth Jr. and Akayleb Evans favored to open the 2023 season as two of the Vikings' top three corners, the team now has some insurance in Blackmon and Ward.

With Ward, Minnesota is adding a 6-foot-1, 188-pound cornerback who has the versatility to line up at multiple positions in the secondary. At LSU in 2022, the Vikings' newest corner logged in 230 snaps in the slot, 178 snaps on the outside, 108 snaps in the box, and 104 snaps deep according to PFF.
Ward's versatility should allow new Minnesota defensive coordinator Brian Flores to confuse opposing offenses, as he likes to do with his aggressive approach to defense.
