Vikings News: Minnesota adds former Gopher to 2023 practice squad

It's not the biggest Minnesota Vikings news we're probably going to hear this week, but on Thursday, the team announced that they had signed former Minnesota Golden Gophers quarterback Tanner Morgan to their practice squad.

Morgan was not selected in the 2023 NFL Draft earlier this year, but he did land with the Pittsburgh Steelers shortly after as an undrafted free agent.

He spent the majority of the offseason with the Steelers. However, he wasn't among the players they selected for their final 53-man roster before the start of the 2023 regular season.

So now, Morgan gets an opportunity to be a part of the organization that plays its home games right down the road from where he spent his college career at the University of Minnesota.

Morgan spent six years as a Golden Gopher, and during his career at the school, he completed 62.2 of his passes (1,063 attempts) for 9,469 yards, 65 touchdowns, and 32 interceptions, in addition to adding another eight scores with his legs.

His best single-season performance as a Golden Gopher happened back in 2019 when he helped lead the school to an 11-2 record by throwing for 3,253 yards, 30 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions.

Vikings quarterback Nick Mullens appeared on the team's injury report on Wednesday with a back injury. So it's possible that the addition of Morgan on Thursday was made by Minnesota in case Mullens can't suit up for the team's upcoming game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Either way, it gives the Vikings an opportunity to get another young quarterback in the building to see if he can help them in any way in the near future.
