One notable Vikings position battle might have already come to an end

This summer, the Minnesota Vikings have several position battles that need to be sorted out during training camp and the preseason before the regular season begins in September.

In a bit of a surprise, one Vikings position battle might have already come to an end after only four training camp practices, as the team waived kicker John Parker Romo on Monday in order to make room on the roster for veteran defensive back Bobby McCain.

On his X account, Romo indicated that he "might be back sooner than later" with Minnesota, so it's possible that his departure from the team could be temporary.

Have the Minnesota Vikings selected rookie Will Reichard as the winner of their kicking battle?

At first glance, it seems like Reichard has already emerged as Minnesota's kicker for the upcoming 2024 season. However, Romo's post on X leads one to believe that the Vikings could potentially bring him back in the near future.

But even if Minnesota does re-sign Romo, Reichard would still likely be the favorite to enter the regular season as the team's kicker.

Not only did the Vikings spend a sixth-round draft pick on Reichard earlier this year, but he's looked tremendous during his time on the field with the team in OTAs and training camp. Most recently, the rookie kicker converted all five of his field-goal attempts during Saturday's practice.

Romo originally landed with Minnesota back in March during free agency, and prior to his arrival, he had short stints with the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, New Orleans Saints, and the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas.

Given Romo's lack of experience in the NFL (no field goal or extra-point attempts in a regular-season game), many assumed the Vikings were still going to add another kicker to their roster before training camp this summer, and that turned out to be true when they drafted Reichard.

Minnesota's last few attempts to find a reliable kicker in the draft didn't turn out very well, but the team is hopeful that Reichard can find a way to break that trend.
