3 veterans who won't make Vikings roster Week 1
By Ryan Heckman
Can the Minnesota Vikings see repeated success in 2023? Last year was quite the wild ride, seeing the team win a record 11 one-score games.
Vikings fans are hoping for a few less heart attacks this coming season, to go with a firm, winning record, and they'll do it with a roster that has a few new faces at key positions. This team attempted to turn over their defense and fill some holes on a unit that was one of the worst in the league last year.
Offensively, we're still set to see plenty of firepower so long as Justin Jefferson is on the field.
We know about the big names, though, so which other players face a tough road ahead to make the team? Specifically, which veterans likely won't see their name on that 53-man roster? We have three for you.
Theo Jackson, S
Minnesota's safety room is pretty set for the most part. Until the team decides to finally part with Harrison Smith, that's a starting spot that's locked down. The other starting spot, for now, seems to be Camryn Bynum. The next safety up, and maybe someone who could take Bynum's spot, would be last year's rookie Lewis Cine out of Cincinnati.
Other than those three, it's likely that rookie defensive back Jonathan Ward ends up a full-time safety and possible a nickel. The Vikings very well could keep Josh Metellus also, which would give them a potential fifth safety.
That leaves veteran Theo Jackson as an odd man out, here, unfortunately. Jackson only played a total of 18 snaps last year and would be an ideal practice squad candidate after he's cut. He knows the guys, has some chemistry there, and would come as a welcomed addition there.
