Former NFL punter Pat McAfee recently made a controversial statement about Minnesota Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson benefitting from running back Dalvin Cook.

On Wednesday, former NFL punter and host of the wildly popular "Pat McAfee Show", Pat McAfee, caused a bit of commotion when he stated the following about former Minnesota Vikings running back Dalvin Cook.

"Dalvin Cook was [Minnesota's] offense. The reason why I think Justin Jefferson has all of the [success] is because Dalvin Cook's in the backfield."

Um, excuse me? Jefferson was successful last season because of Cook? Wasn't it the other way around? Because it was.

Pat McAfee says he has massive respect for Minnesota Vikings WR Justin Jefferson

Unsurprisingly, McAfee's comments on Wednesday resulted in a bunch of Vikings fans voicing their disagreement with him. So on Thursday, the former NFL punter attempted to clarify what he was alluding to with his original comments about Cook and Jefferson.

"I said while breaking down Dalvin Cook, I said like 'he helps Justin Jefferson.' And I don't know how I said it. I haven't listened to it back, so that's 100 percent on me.

I have massive respect for Justin Jefferson. I never said anything about Justin Jefferson not being incredible.

I'm just talking about, fundamentally, whenever there is a star missing from the field, that is going to change the way a defense looks at the whole thing. Never said Justin Jefferson wasn't unbelievable ."

Now, just a reminder, McAfee is a former NFL punter, not a former NFL cornerback, because that was quite the backpedaling job by him on Thursday.

McAfee is trying to claim that he said Cook's presence on the field was something that helped take some of the attention off of Jefferson last season. This might have been what he was attempting to get across on Wednesday, but the quotes above clearly show that isn't what he originally said.

But even McAfee's clarification is wrong. Jefferson was the one who drew the attention away from Cook last season, not the other way around. Even with fewer defenders near the line of scrimmage, the former Vikings running back still struggled to gain yards on the ground at an efficient rate.

So something tells us that Jefferson, the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year, should still be able to produce for Minnesota during the upcoming season even with Cook no longer on the team's roster.
