After the Minnesota Vikings selected him in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, expectations were relatively high for former Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr., even as a rookie.

Following his first two years with the Vikings, however, it seems like those expectations for Booth were definitely way too high. He's been on the field for less than 25 percent of Minnesota's defensive snaps in each of his two seasons with the team, and he's allowed a 78.3 completion percentage to opposing quarterbacks when he's been in pass coverage.

Booth's spot on the Vikings' final 2024 roster was already surrounded with uncertainty heading into the team's training camp this week. But after Minnesota added another player to its secondary on Tuesday, the chances of Booth sticking around for the regular season seem to now be even lower than they were just 24 hours ago.

Duke Shelley returning to Minnesota Vikings is bad news for Andrew Booth Jr.

As a number of the team's veteran players reported to the TCO Performance Center on Tuesday to check in for training camp, the Vikings were busy adding another player to their roster.

Minnesota announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to a contract with free-agent cornerback Duke Shelley, who was previously a member of the Vikings during the 2022 season.

In that 2022 campaign, Shelley ended up appearing in 11 games (five as a starter) for Minnesota after spending the first portion of the schedule on the team's practice squad. He was arguably the Vikings' best corner in 2022, as opposing quarterbacks only completed 45.7 percent of their passes and generated a measly 55.2 passer rating when throwing in his direction.

Byron Murphy Jr., Shaq Griffin, and Mekhi Blackmon seem to have the top-three cornerback spots locked up on Minnesota's depth chart heading into the 2024 season. So, during the next few weeks, Shelley will be battling it out with Booth, Akayleb Evans, Jaylin Williams, rookie Dwight McGlothern, and others for the final two or three spots in the position group.

Will Booth finally live up to his potential and land a spot on the Vikings' final 2024 roster, or will he be left on the outside looking in when Minnesota heads into the regular season?
