Is signing Kareem Hunt still a possibility for the Vikings?
By Adam Patrick
Last month, the Minnesota Vikings held a visit with free-agent running back Kareem Hunt. In the end, Hunt wound up leaving without signing a contract with the Vikings and the two parties went their separate ways.
Well, the former Cleveland Browns running back is still a free agent and is currently still waiting for "the right offer" according to NFL Media's Tom Pelissero. In addition, Pelissero also revealed that four teams have made a contract offer to Hunt within the last few weeks, so he's had plenty of interest.
With Minnesota recently placing Kene Nwangwu on injured reserve, the team only has three running backs on their current active roster. The Vikings did just sign Myles Gaskin after he was cut by the Miami Dolphins, but could Minnesota still have an interest in adding Hunt to their 2023 roster?
It's possible, but the recent addition of Gaskin certainly makes it seem like the chances are now lower that Hunt eventually ends up with the Vikings.
Minnesota had met with multiple free-agent running backs during the last few weeks, and they appeared to be looking for someone who could come in and be a solid compliment to starter Alexander Mattison.
Hunt is likely looking for an opportunity where he can start or at least compete to be a starter for a team this season. That doesn't seem to be something that the Vikings are interested in providing, so Gaskin is a better fit for what they were looking to add to their running back room this year.
At this point, an injury to Mattison or Gaskin would probably be the only reason why Minnesota would consider signing Hunt this season. Even then, the Vikings might not be willing to agree to pay whatever amount of money the former Browns running back believes he's worth.
So, for anyone who is still holding out hope that Minnesota will sign Hunt this year, don't hold your breath because it's probably not going to happen.
