Rumors involving San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance aren't going anywhere after the Minnesota Vikings didn't add a new passer on Day 1 of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Shortly before this year's NFL Draft, a rumor popped up about the Minnesota Vikings and San Francisco 49ers having a discussion about a possible trade involving quarterback Trey Lance. Following what the Vikings decided to do with their first-round pick on Thursday, these rumors won't be disappearing anytime soon.
With the 23rd selection in the opening round of this year's NFL Draft, Minnesota could have used their pick on former Kentucky quarterback Will Levis or former Tennessee signal-caller Hendon Hooker. Instead, the Vikings used the selection on former USC wide receiver Jordan Addison.
It's possible that Minnesota could figure out a way to land Levis or Hooker in the second or third round on Friday. But if that doesn't happen, don't be surprised if additional rumors about the Vikings potentially trading for Lance begin to pop up.
Minnesota Vikings trade for San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance likely would not happen until after June 1st
If Minnesota and San Francisco were to agree to a trade involving Lance in the future, a deal probably would not be completed until after June 1st.
Currently, if the 49ers were to trade their young quarterback, they would lose more than $1.7 million in cap space and be left with a dead cap hit of almost $11.1 million for 2023. If San Francisco waits until June 1st or later to make a deal involving Lance, that loss of cap space will transform into them freeing up more than $3.7 million while their dead cap hit for 2023 would reduce to $5.5 million.
So if the 49ers and Vikings end up making a trade with Lance included this offseason, nothing would likely be finalized until after June 1st
