Updated Vikings injury report for Week 2 creates concern before 49ers matchup
By Adam Patrick
While the first Minnesota Vikings injury report of the week featured a surprise with linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel being listed as a non-participant in practice with a foot injury, Thursday's injury report included an even bigger surprise as the team continues to prepare for its upcoming showdown against the San Francisco 49ers.
On Minnesota's second injury report of Week 2, the team revealed that All-Pro safety Harrison Smith sat out Thursday's practice with a hip injury. Smith was not on the Vikings' first injury report of the week, so it's possible that he got hurt during the team's practice on Wednesday.
In addition to Minnesota's veteran safety not practicing on Thursday, Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison sat out for the second straight day with an ankle injury. Minnesota linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel (foot), center Garrett Bradbury (knee), and right tackle Brian O'Neill (elbow) were all listed as limited participants in Thursday's practice, and receiver Jalen Nailor was a full participant despite being listed with an ankle injury.
How concerning is Harrison Smith being listed on the Minnesota Vikings injury report for Week 2 vs. the San Francisco 49ers?
If there was one Vikings position group that is best equipped to handle an injury to a starter, it's easily the guys inside the safety room.
If Smith is unable to play in the team's Week 2 game against the 49ers on Sunday, Minnesota should feel confident about the other safeties on its roster being able to make up for the loss of the six-time Pro Bowler.
Smith not practicing on Thursday could also just be the Vikings acting with precaution with one of the oldest players on their roster. Minnesota doesn't really have to worry about him not knowing what to do out on the field if he doesn't practice during the week, so there's no reason to force him on the practice field if he's dealing with an injury.
Friday's injury report will reveal more information about whether Smith will play on Sunday or not. As for Addison, it seems safe to say that his new ankle injury is probably going to keep him out of action against San Francisco this weekend.
