that the Vikings DE had suffered a pectoral injury while working out at Winter Park, but Robison assuaged any worries about his future by texting media members that he’ll “be okay.”
Doctors have not yet determined the extent of Robison’s injury, but rest assured, the defensive line stalwart will be okay. How do I know? Because he said so.
The Vikings surely are hoping that Robison will be okay, as they’re already on the hook for $2 million of his $4.15 million base salary for 2015. That $2 million became guaranteed on the third day of the league year.
The remainder of Robison’s salary for 2015 becomes guaranteed on July 1. By that time, the Vikings should know whether Robison will be fully healthy in time for the start of the season.
Some speculated that the Vikings might cut Robison or at least re-negotiate his contract ahead of the deadline for him to collect the first $2 million in guaranteed money, but the Vikings clearly had no qualms about paying him that money.
The Vikings believed that Robison, a player whose production took a big dip in 2014, was well worth the investment of at least $2 million in guaranteed money. This is a pretty durable player, after all. One who, despite his run-stopping deficiencies, is still viewed by many as a starting caliber defensive end.
And when July 1 rolls around, the Vikings will have to pay Robison another $2.15 million even if he doesn’t play a single snap in 2015.
If Robison’s injury unexpectedly proves to be worse than originally thought, the Vikings’ alternatives at left defensive end right now include 2014 3rd round pick Scott Crichton, 2015 3rd round pick Danielle Hunter (a project player who best projects as a right end), 2015 6th round pick B.J. DuBose and free agent pick-up Casesar Rayford.
But there’s no reason to worry about replacing Brian Robison right now, because Robison is going to be okay.
