Chad Greenway Reportedly Working Out New Deal With Vikings

There are still a lot of unknowns about the 2015 Vikings but one thing I know for sure and have known for sure for quite some time? Chad Greenway will not play for Minnesota this year at his current salary number.

After a season in which the normally-durable linebacker missed several games with injury, seeing his overall production dip to bottom-of-the-barrel levels in the process, there is no way the Vikings pay Greenway $7 million for one year.

So, if Greenway is going to stick around, something will have to be done about that contract. And according to Tom Pelissero, something is reportedly being done.

Cutting Greenway outright and giving a young player a shot at the Will linebacker job might be the best option for the team but Mike Zimmer seems to value Greenway’s veteran presence despite his sagging on-field productivity so it looks like Greenway is going to stay in the fold one way or the other.

I’m not in love with Greenway as a player right now but if his leadership is really that important and Zimmer thinks he can still perform at a level where he is not an outright liability to the club, then I guess having him back for one more year at a reasonable salary is something I can live with.

It seems Gerald Hodges and Audie Cole are not as highly-valued inside the walls of Winter Park as they are among fans. I would have thought both men had surpassed Greenway on the depth chart by the end of 2014 but what do I know?
