Former Viking Erin Henderson Has Visit Scheduled With 49ers

Erin Henderson is moving closer to getting another chance in the NFL.

The former Vikings linebacker, who missed all of 2014 after a pair of DUI arrests, reportedly held a private workout for teams before Sunday’s veteran combine in Arizona.

That workout led to Henderson scoring a visit with the San Francisco 49ers, reports Josina Anderson.

Henderson will travel to San Francisco Wednesday in hopes of catching on. The 49ers are in dire need of linebacker help after seeing both Patrick Willis and Chris Borland retire (though some argue Borland didn’t actually retire but he quit).

The 28-year-old Erin Henderson rose from UDFA status to become a solid Will linebacker in Leslie Frazier’s system, but saw his production dip after being shifted to the Mike position in 2013.

Things went from bad to worse for Henderson after a late season DUI arrest. Henderson was arrested a second time for DUI on New Year’s Eve 2013 and was subsequently cut by the Vikings.

Henderson has since spoken about his struggle with alcohol and insists he has cleaned up his life and wants to get back to playing pro football. The linebacker previously had a workout with the Cincinnati Bengals.

When/if Henderson does return to the NFL, he will have to serve a four game suspension stemming from his pair of arrests. Henderson was once good enough to score a place on PFF’s Top 101 players though I’m guessing the Niners would be content if he just proves to be a solid backup.
