Mike Priefer Thinks Longer Extra Points Will Make Game ‘More Exciting’

What effect if any will longer extra point kicks have on the NFL game?

Kickers like Blair Walsh don’t seem that concerned. And if you ask the numbers crunchers, moving kicks back a few yards won’t have a significant impact.

It’s enough to make you wonder why the NFL bothered moving kicks back at all.

Well, if you ask Vikings special teams coach Mike Priefer, the longer kick will have an effect somewhere along the line and will ultimately make for a more interesting product.

Here’s what Priefer had to say via Dan Hanzus of Around the NFL:

Of course Priefer wants place kicking to play a bigger role in the game. He’s a special teams coach. The more his units positively impact a game, the better he looks.

Priefer is lucky he has a kicker in Blair Walsh who has lots of leg and is mostly accurate (as long as he doesn’t get mixed up by the wind patterns at TCF Bank Stadium).

If longer extra points occasionally make for a more suspenseful outcome, then that’s great news. As long as the Vikings don’t wind up on the wrong end of an “exciting” missed or blocked PAT late in a game.
