Shaun Prater tweets that he is gone (updated with more Vikings cuts)

The Vikings have not yet reported any final cuts but players and their agents have already begun getting the bad news. One of the first to reveal that he’s gotten a pink slip is defensive back Shaun Prater.

Prater was claimed off waivers by the Vikings in 2013 after he was let go by the Eagles. He managed to hang on for the 2014 season after switching to safety for Mike Zimmer.

Prater’s ability to backup at both safety and his original position of cornerback was the main reason many had him lasting through final cuts. But that versatility clearly was not enough.

This cut means there’s a better chance the Vikings hang on to an extra linebacker, which is great news for a guy like Michael Mauti, who helped his case Thursday night by blocking a punt.

One assumes that the Vikings will soon be announcing all their cuts. Or maybe they’ll swing a trade. There have been a lot of trades going down in the last few days.

The Vikings also could look to pick someone up off the waiver wire after all the cuts are in. But that won’t start happening until Saturday’s deadline and the subsequent waiver deadline have passed.

So many deadlines.

Update: WR Donte Foster has joined Prater in tweeting about his release.

Update: More roster cuts have been reported. These men will not be back on the practice squad.

Update: Offensive lineman Bobby Vardaro, who stunk it up royally Thursday night in Tennessee, is also gone.

And there’s a report that Josh Thomas is gone too.
