A surprise move to some but not that big a surprise move: The Minnesota Vikings reportedly have cut linebacker Michael Mauti as part of their final round of moves to get down to the 53-man limit ahead of Saturday’s 3 PM CT deadline.

The Vikings also reportedly will/have cut LB Brandon Watts, meaning 2015 7th round draft pick Edmond Robinson appears to have made the team.

Mauti made a final case for himself Thursday night by blocking a punt and then making the recovery, but that play by itself evidently wasn’t enough to sway things in his favor.

I have to believe it was a little painful to cut Mauti, a very fierce competitor who brought a lot of value to special teams.

I mean here’s a guy who knew he was on the bubble and blocked a punt in his final showcase game. That’s laying it all out on the line.

You know Mike Zimmer has to like Mauti. But you can’t keep everyone.

The linebacker who was kept in favor of Mauti and Watts, Edmond Robinson, also showed up in preseason and obviously was too intriguing a talent to let go.

Robinson definitely has a nice frame for a linebacker if nothing else. And the fact that he was able to make a few plays in preseason obviously didn’t hurt his cause.

Watts was another guy who came on late in preseason but again it wasn’t enough to turn the tide in his favor.

These cuts will all be officially announced by the Vikings some time in the near future.

We also just learned that Tyrus Thompson has reportedly been cut, reversing a previous report that his Thursday-night concussion had rescued him from being let go.

Center Tom Farniok has also been released. FB Blake Renaud has been released but is expected back on the practice squad.

The Vikings also reportedly have cut former Gophers WR Isaac Fruechte but plan on having him back on the practice squad.
