The Minnesota Vikings suddenly find themselves thin at running back and it’s a need they’ll have to address this April during the 2019 NFL Draft.

The  Minnesota Vikings had pretty decent depth at running back a season ago. Dalvin Cook was the starter with Latavius Murray being a more bruising type of runner and a nice change of pace as the backup. Cook was often injured and Murray had no problem toting the load when called upon.

Behind them were undrafted rookies Mike Boone and Roc Thomas. Boone ran with a physical style and Thomas was an excellent receiver out of the backfield.

What a difference a year makes as Murray has signed with the New Orleans Saints and Thomas has been arrested on marijuana-related charges. That leaves Cook, Boone, and Ameer Abdullah as the top three backs on the Vikings’ current depth chart.

This isn’t an issue if Cook is able to stay healthy. But after two full seasons in the NFL, this has yet to happen.

Minnesota has to select a running back in this year’s NFL Draft to compete with Boone as the primary backup. The Vikings could decide to pull the trigger as early as round two or wait and try to uncover a talented ball carrier in the later rounds.

Who are five realistic running back options that Minnesota could consider taking during the 2019 draft?
